 Whole Cloth Quilts
Author: Elizabeth Clark

Just wanted to share a fun little thing I've found: I love the look of whole cloth (white) quilts, but with two black dogs in our family, and small children, they're not terribly practical.

However, I've still found a way to indulge: baby blankets! I use batiste for the top and back, and a layer of cotton flannel for the batting. I'm able to mark and hand or machine quilt very complex designs, but I'm only committed to a 45x45" quilt. Because it's a baby quilt, and made of lovely domestic batiste (I love the Martha's Favorite best, with Victorian Batiste a close second), it's VERY washable for the recipient, and when I use all white (with slightly off-white quilting thread), it looks very classic, but can be bleached back to white as often as needed (so it's regularly used by Baby!)

I have done this too. Very pretty and very useable. It might be fun to try using a different color fabric too, perhaps a pink for a girl or blue for a boy, and doing the quilting in a matching color or using a varigated thread.

Elizabeth, can you post a photo on the NPP site? I love making different baby blankets.

Snort--that would be easy if I didn't keep sending them off to other people's babies. LOL

I'm working on one for our own baby, though, due in February... I'll post images when that one is finished, happily!

How do you finish the edges?

I either "bag" the blanket (stitch the top and batting right sides together with the backing, trim, turn, and topstitch--when I want a really ornate corner or two), or do a normal binding, or turn the backing to the front as a binding... depends on how eager I am to get going, really. LOL

When my sis turned 50- we won't say what year. I quilted her a queen size white on white quilt. It took 14 months of quilting. When I handed it over to her I think it would have been easier to give her my dd. DD was a teenager and a handfull!! lol!!!

In life and death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Sprit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve....

Hee hee... that's why I like the baby-sized quilts... 45"x45" doesn't "hurt" so badly....

LOL

Elizabeth, this sounds like a really neat gift.

I sew mostly kids clothes and a few for myself. I have just bought a new machine, Janome 4800QC. It is billed as a quilters machine, but I bought it for the heirloom stitches and "cool computer stuff" - like updown-needle position and easier buttonholes. I am just brimming over with excitement about trying all kinds of new things. Don't know how many I will actually be able to do with time constraints and all. This sounds facinating though. I like the design aspect.

I know nothing about machine quilting. My grandmother used to quilt by hand. She had these huge room-sized wooden frames that she used to stretch the quilt in. I have a foot for my new machine that is like a little ring-finger sized circle with a spring mechanism. Is this the foot you use? Do you do this with feed-dogs up or down? Is stitch lenght up to how fast you move it? How do you keep the layers from shifting as you sew? How long does it take you to make one of these little quilts. I am always looking to make neat baby gifts.

Becky, that is the right foot for free motion quilting. You generally use it with feed dogs down. Stitch length is determined by how you move the piece. It takes a lot of practice. The quilt should be basted, pin-basted or spray basted before you do this.

Another foot that is used for machine quilting is the walking foot. It's a big foot that helps to feed the top of the quilt at the same rate as the bottom layer. It is used with the feed dogs up, and works best for straight lines or gentle curves.
