 The Sugar Solution
Author: Virginia Belle

Have any of you read or are reading The Sugar Solution by Rodale books? I have just started reading, and I'm fascinated by the concept of the glycemic index. I'm not diabetic, but this seems to be how all of us should be eating to prevent problems with insulin resistance and/or diabetes. I think this would be a fairly simply plan to follow. I’m a slow reader, and I don’t have much free time for reading, so it will take me awhile to get through the book. Just wondering if any of you have experience with it.

Please let me know what you learn from this book. I think I need to buy it. I quit having so much stomach trouble when I quit eating so much sugar. I've had 9- and 10- pound babies and had low blood sugar so was told I would probably or possibly have adult-onset diabetes. I don't have it yet and don't want it!

My sugar intake has completely changed. I almost never eat sugar, even though I am not diabetic. I keep Splenda in the house for guests, or if necessary for cooking, but I try not to use it. I use Stevia....and if you have never heard of this, you should research it. Stevia is a plant, and the leaves are ground to make a fine powder. This is ALL NATURAL, nothing added to it, and is tremendously sweet. You barely need 1/8 of a tsp. in a glass of iced tea...and that might even be too much. I use one of those little plastic spoons you get for samples of ice cream tastes and I don't even use 1/4 of that spoon. Stevia is used all over the world for sweetening Coca Cola and other drinks, plus foods. Every can of soda sold all over Germany, France, China, etc., is sweetened with Stevia. BUT, it is not permitted to be sold as a "sweetener" here in the U.S.....the lobbyists made certain that it could not be a sweetener product, or it would have shut down Splenda, Equal, Nutrasweet, etc. & put these big companies out of business. It can be sold in the U.S. only as a health food product. Go on google.com and research it....you will be amazed what it says. They also sell it on ebay at good prices....just be sure it is pure Stevia, and not some other stuff in it, which some companies are starting to do. This is NOT a sugar product or additive, and is terrific for those that cannot eat sugar....there are even Stevia cookbooks, and I have a couple.

If a doctor told you that you might end up with adult-onset diabetes based on low blood sugar issues when you were younger, just throw that information away and don't worry about it. I swear they always paint us worst case scenario pictures. I'll bet that only 1 in 1,000 turns out that way but to cover their butts, they tell us this garbage.

What's far worse for us than moderate use of natural sugar (I now use - very limited - organic raw sugar) is all the artificial chemicals in over-processed foods! Why do we need all this sugar, salt, preservatives and chemicals in our food anyway? I just buy fresh food and prepare it without extra salt or sugar - it took a while for dh to get used to it, but he's starting to complain about how salty food is when we go out to a restaurant. It's all a matter of conditioning our taste buds.

Personally feel that all these chemicals in our food is responsible for the supposed increase in ADHD in children, depression, anxiety disorders, etc. I'll bet if people with these subjective diagnoses had real food to eat for a week, there would be a dramatic improvement.

Sewlynn - I have been using Raw sugar for a few years and load up on it when I am in the U.S. because I can buy it so much cheaper and in bigger bags - here the size of the bag or container is 500g or 450g which is a pound. It is the only thing that I put in my coffee no more white sugar if I can help it, I also do not use much in the way of packaged foods and we rarely eat canned soup and things of that nature - I am a cook from scratch sort of cook. I also do not eat any thing like salad dressings, mayo, ketchup, pickles - we eat fresh fruit and veg and meat and whole wheat bread - I use butter and cook mostly with olive oil or grapeseed oil - I have cut back to 1% milk and low fat cheese and yogurt - recently my husband bought me a yogurt maker and so now I make my own yogurt and add frozen berries to it. My husband likes it and I think it is better for the stomach.
We rarely have hot dogs or sausage and probably eat too much red meat although I am trying to do more chicken/lamb/veal/pork for variety.
I prefer to have an orange or grapefruit rather than juice but DH has both.
I have never smoked and do not drink - ditto for DH although he does have one glass of red wine with dinner.

There have been books about sugar like The Sugar Blues and others. Also, glycemic index is a hot topic. Diabetics have to follow a strict diet as their bodies do not make insulin. The rest of us eat sugar naturally in fruit and vegetables. Foods with extra sugar like candy, pop and coated cereal, for example, should be avoided in general. I doubt if anyone without an actual health problem would alter their diet without being advised of that by a physician based on tests, but I know of people who are not doctors who sell vitamins based on a supposed laboratory. I feel sorry for people who follow incorrect advise for which they are not insured and waste their money when all the vitamins they need are in natural foods. Just about every product in the US is loaded with derivatives from corn which is a subsidized crop and cheap for the food manufacturers. It is so prevalent and makes a sweetener added to just about everything. The labels tell the tale. That is why I try to eat without additives. As long as my blood tests do not show a problem, I will continue. Fortunately, I do not have that pop habit. That stuff is full of sugar and additives.

A few years ago I noticed that when I ingest something with preservatives that my joints ache and I just don't feel well in general. This past week I had that same feeling and couldn't figure out why. It never occurred to me to read the ingredients in bottled water ... it's just water, right? Wrong. The one I had picked up last week had two kinds of preservatives in it! (Wasn't my usual brand.) It also had a minute amount of something that I suspect is a sweetener. I think I'm going to go back to using my Britta to filter tap water.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to find unadulterated food without paying an arm and a leg for it, if one can find it at all - what is labeled organic and natural sometimes is deceptively labeled. Although, when I travel outside of my somewhat economically depressed area, I notice that there are more and more natural and organic restaurants and groceries available. I'm hoping this is a 'trend' that becomes mainstream and that things will start to swing back and become more affordable.
