 Interlining
Author: Kimba

I need to make some "high-end" drapery panels and have been told to use interlining (an English fabric called bump) as well as traditional lining. Does anyone know how to do this? I am really confused.

Have not used this product myself but perhaps others have or some of our English ladies will comment here. :o)

Great sites, but they do not explain how - just what the stuff is. Has anyone made drapes with this? How is it done.

It is an interlining for drapes, some concept as interling for a coat, jacket or dress. My understanding is that is adds weight to the drapries and helps them to hang better and also helps block out light. Do you have a drapry store nearby? Go visit with them about the possibities of drapes and underlinings such as bump or make a few phone calls to some firms and visit with them about bump. :o)

Most underlining provide a protection from sunrot and fading. There are some great ones out there. I prefer the ones that totally block UVs so that the fabric is not corrupted easily. I also like the ones that provide total room darkening, this will keep the room cool on hot summer days and if you are light sensitive like I am or prone to migraines, they will block the light and darken the room when needed. Depending on which direction the windows face (if they face the south, I would definitly go with the UV sunblockers, facing the north, they will receive indirect UVs, East or West they will get direct UVs for at least half the day (depending on the season)) will also make a difference in the type of interlining you may chose.

God bless, SewingBird

Terry, I think you are speaking of drapery linings, and I agree. I've draped all the rooms in 2 houses, and didn't use interlining until I was pushed to, but I loved it.
Bump is like cotton flannel, only thicker. It adds beautiful body to drapes, and decreases see through of a pattern. See through can be a problem, for example, in jabots with a solid "lining" (it shows when it's folded), and a print front fabric.
Interlining draperies is just like interlining clothes: simply back the drape fabric with the interlining fabric, and sew the 2 layers as 1 layer.
Now, if I could spend the necessary amount, I would interline all my draperies. Happy sewing!
