Vanessa, I would like to learn to tat for the same reason. A friend gave me a shuttle and I tried to learn from some books that I borrowed from the library by I couldn't get it. This summer when I have more time, I'll try again. Good luck. Gita

HI,
Tatting is seeing a resurgence, both quilt shops in my area now offer tatting classes, the samples are adorable, next time I visit the shop I will check and see what book they teach from .

I've been tatting for about 10 years now. I started out by using needle tatting. This is very easy to do (just buy the kit) and go to town! Later on, I picked up shuttle tatting which I actually like much better. It seems that I have more control of the tension. Anyway, here is a site that explains how to shuttle tat - http://www.craftown.com/instruction/tatting.htm
The internet is a great place to find stuff - all kinds of instructions and patterns. Just type "tatting" into a search engine.
The hardest part of tatting for me was figuring out how to make my knot flip so it would slide. Needle tatting is great for this because you learn what tatting should look like - then you can progress on to a shuttle.
I hope this helps. It is a wonderful art form. Good luck.

I taught myself tatting both the shuttle and the needle. I like needle tatting as I don't seem to have as much problems with my carpal tunnel. The shuttle will give you a stiffer result. There is a web site I have gone too which is good www.paradisetreasures.com The woman who started the site is very nice and knowledgeable. She also has an online group but I haven't join it yet. Check it out I think you might like it. If we lived closer, I would be willing to at least get you started. I live in New Hampshire. I have an AOL account -- TattingChris@AOL.com (I like tatting, can you tell!).

I was in Michaels and they have 3-4 books on how to do "tatting" and so it's definitely experiencing a resurgence if Michaels is carrying it!

http://www.curbstone.ca I noticed also carries a number of tatting books and supplies. A few of the books were the ones I saw in Michaels. Good luck!

Coats and Clark also have a book. Mine is OLD! From when I was in high school. But I went to their site, and they have a new one.

I bought a book called "Learn Heedle Tatting Step by Step" by Barbara foster. It came with a needle and threader. I couldn't catch on to shuttle tatting, the needle tatting is much easier.

It's great to see renewed interest in tatting! I learned from my grandmother...I am left handed, so I sat in front of her and duplicated her moves until I got it right. I still have some pillowcases with tatting she did on them. It is so beautiful and elegant!

There is a national lace (tatting) organization. Where you can join and attend classes and learn how to tat. They also have local organization in most state listed at this national organization. If you have to learn on your own, needle tatting might be the best to learn how to make the knot. However, shuttle tatting is faster, and tighter, and gives you a better stitch. I have listed the sight where to learn shuttle tatting and the national lace society where you can find a lace chapter near you. I am also left-handed. I found that most left handed tatter learn how to tat right-handed. It is easy to do word pattern right handed. If you tat left handed you have to reverse the pattern, much like you have to with crocheting. One thing about tatting is that it cannot be reproduce by machine!!!! All tatting is done by hand, by someone. If I knew what state you live in, I could find a club by you. Let me know if you need any more help in learning how to tat. There is not much to learn how to tat but the secret is to learn how to flip the knot and practice holding the thread. Flip the knot early and you will have no problem!!

I found the following books below to be very helpful when I was learning how to tat by needle plus the following web sights. As you can see, I am a visual person and need to see everything. The book shows you how to needle tat right or left- handed. If you learn needle tatting it should only take you about 1 day to learn shuttle tatting. I taught an owner of a needle shop who only could needle tat, to learn how to shuttle tat in 20 minutes. I am a left- handed tatter but can tat both ways, so I can teach. She only shuttle tats now, as it is a better stitch. However, the funny part was that her first class she gave she had four women that wanted to learn how to shuttle tat left handed.

I took a class from Gary Houtz this summer. He is one of the best tatters that I have met beside one of the ladies in our group. He is over 6 feet tall and has the biggest hand you have ever seen. His brother tats also and make shuttle. Just remember the shuttles are right handed only. This is his web site. http://www.geocities.com/gr8shuttles/

NEEDLE TATTING: Book 1 & Book 2 by Barbara Foster. 5½ x 8½, 24 pgs each book. (1990) These two books come as a set. Each book contains black and white photographs illustrating step-by-step instructions showing how easy the art of tatting can be. Learn how to tat using any pattern. It is faster and easier to do than ever! You will also learn how to do two-color tatting. #134888 $12.00
