 Hussif (2004)
Author: KathyK

Is anyone working on, or have you already made, Beverly Sheldrick's hussif that Martha Pullen recently reprinted as an individual project? (It originally was in one of the her television series books) I've been working on it, doing all the silk ribbon embroidery, imagining Beverly is at my side, reminding me not to work with such long ribbon pieces, encouraging me and sometimes reminding me to take a "minty moment". The instructions are clear, the pictures are beautiful and I am looking forward to completing the project. This is not going to be a ufo. I am looking forward to using this hussif. I chose a soft colored gold silk and it is so interesting to see how the background colors affect the colors of silk used in the embroidery. I feel a little selfish but am really enjoying working on this project for me. K

I bought the original book awhile ago and I also purchased some dark rose colored dupioni at MP Lace Camp in February. I have lots of silk ribbon and I want to dye some also, one of my DDs bought me dyes and plain silk ribbon and floss from Things Japanese. I really need to get started on this project.

I have the book and all good intentions of making it but have yet to start. Once I get going I know I'll love it - just gotta get started!

I used some dye to make some varigated ribbon and it has worked up so pretty, especially in the roses. Give yourself a kick in the pants and start this project. It is really so beautiful. Note, I used little tiny bits of left over chamois from the scissors case as backing on the wrong side as I attach the buttons. It really doesn't add any bulk and I feel it makes attaching the buttons more secure. Go ahead and get started, the hussif is composed of a number of small pieces you can take with you to work on when traveling or waiting in offices or whenever you have a short period of time. K

Hi Everyone:

I too have this book and am planning on making it - now that the Easter sewing is over, maybe now is the right time! I am planning on making it plain (no embroidery) using left over Royal Stewart plaid silk dupioni from my children's christmas outfits and some green dupioni that bought from MP for my stash.

I made one of Beverly's tiny needle books for my sister and used a leftover peice of ultrasuede in place of the chamois and found that it protected the case from the scissor points as well as the chamois and didnt stick as much putting the scissors in.

Just a thought.

Let us know how the stiching goes Kathy! You really deserve such a beautiful gift for yourself! Great job!

Dawn's rose coloured silk sounds so pretty. I can just imagine how pretty the silk ribbon embroidery will be on that. Nance, the royal stewart plaid sounds so interesting. Are you going to use the green for the piping or for the individual pockets? I'm imagining how that will look, there are so many ways it could be done. Makes me think I should try another one. K

I've nearly finished my Hussif. I embroidered my initials and the year 2004. The hussif is so pretty and worked up so nicely. The scary part for me was painting the vase on the top before I embroidered the flowers. It's not perfect but does add to the character of the hussif. My Mom is going to make herself one now. I wonder what colour silk will she use? K

Hi MM! (how is that adorable little baby?)

A "Hussif" is short for "housewife". In the 1800's, girls made them out of left over silks to store their sewing supplies. They have little pockets for everything - scissors, measuring tape, pins, needles, etc, etc, etc. Beverly Shendrick in Australia has put out several patterns for various sized "Hussif"s. The one we all are talking about is from MP and is in her catalog under patterns (or books).

Hope this helps,

Nance

Can anyone tell me where to get this pattern? I don't see it listed in MP catalog. Was there ever a pattern in one of the Sew Beautifuls?
thanks
Sally

I'm at work, will look when I go home. I know it was in one of the book series produced for the television show as well as published separately as a project. I'm sure if you call MP store they will be able to find what you want. It is such a beautiful project, not for a brand new beginner. Definitely take the time to read thru the instructions and figure it out in your head.

Dawn and Nance, did you get yours done? any tips for others about to begin?
Kathy

I took a class with Beverly Sheldrick and made a beautiful scissors case that was embroidered with ribbons and had the palestrina stitch around the edges. What I wanted to make next is her sewing drawstring bag. She calls it a reticule. Each time she came to New Jersey and offered that class, I wasn't able to attend and feel like I've really missed out. I hope that she'll one day sell a pattern for this bag. Do you know what I'm referring to? Gita

I recently completed several of Beverley's pieces. I think the Victorian reticule is my favorite and perhaps one of the easiest to make. I have pictures if you are interested.

When I took a class with her in the fall for the sewing hussif, I got the impression that there would not be patterns any time soon. She continues to sell kits for all of her pieces.
Interestingly, last Christmas I made a sewing reticule as a Secret Santa gift using a pattern that I purchased at a quilt shop. The construction was very similar to Beverley's except that it was considerably smaller and of course, did not have her lovely silk ribbon embroidery on it, nor did I make it out of silk dupioni. It would certainly be simple enough to make it larger as the pattern pieces are just circles. Del

Emily, I'm so impressed! Your work is beautiful. I did print out a reticule from the Internet but haven't done anything with the pattern as yet. Now I'm trying to complete a quilt. Happy sewing. Gita

Martha is still selling the instruction book for the hussif on her website. Look under Heirloom books, scroll down a bit and you'll see it.

I know this is an older thread, but I've just recently seen my first reticule up close and personal. They are beautiful. I would love to try my hand at one, but I'm not having any luck finding a pattern on the internet. Could you give me the name of the pattern and designer, so I can search further.

Sincerely,
Debbie
