Counted Cross Stitch Hoop or Frame?
Author: Kat

I am doing some counted cross stitch to relax.....and recup from some health things....I have always used a hoop, but I have used frames for needlepoint. I tried the cross stitch in a q snap frame, and it held well, but it is cumbersome. I got one of those stands to hold the frame clamped at the top, but it is too unhandy to turn around to secure threads. So, I am back to the hoop. I recently read that the hoop should be big enough to hold the entire design so as not to crush stitches....Some of the pieces I plan to work on are pretty big and I am afraid that will be cumbersome as well. What do you all use? I just can't seem to do the work in hand and I learned with a hoop.....what are the best options, hoops, frames? Suggestions? Thanks!
Hugs,
Kat

I use a 10" sit on frame that I ordered from Wendy Schoen. It lets you use both hands (one on top, one one bottom). When you get the rhythm going it makes cross stichting or other hand work faster.

My DDs both use scroll bar type frames, you stitch the piece to the scroll bars and then roll it up, if you use the short side pieces it's not quite so cumbersome.

I have a floor stand which will accomodate eith stretcher bars or the scroll type frames, is adjustable for height & angle, allows you to swivel front to back for cutting threaads - about 70.00 I think - Giraffe frame. You really don't need a hoop for cross stitch - have done it for years in my hand, but the frame is great for needlepoint.

I'm doing a Moira Blackburn sampler in cross-stitch. It is 24" x 30" and I am using an 11" snap frame. I use large tapestry needles to fold and fix the spare fabric. They are blunt so they dont leave holes.

I also go around all the bits I can reach, then finish with a scroll frame for the middle. Hope this helps.

I have used all the above and really liked my scroll frame for large pieces, but I always used a 4 inch hoop and I have made many, many, many cross stitched pieces for all sizes. I think it comes down to what you really are comfortable with.

Deyanne,

I agree. The important thing is using what works best for you. I like stretcher bars with a floor frame and also a small hoop to hold in my hand. I have loved to embroidery since I was a young child (at least several zillion years ago) and hope I'll be able to continue for several zillion more years.

I like the Rolaframe system for counted thread embroidery. The linen rolls up on the rollers and stays wrinkle free as you work. The Rolaframe is lightweight and the fabrics changes out easily with no basting onto a webbing like some of the other frames. You can look at them at www.dunwoodyneedleworks.com. I sometimes attach them to my lap K-frame (great) or to my custom designed floor stand. They are lightweight enough that I can just hold them and not cause pain. You would order rollers of desired size and sidebars to make a frame. I have other frames that are way to heavy. These were designed by a husband of an embroiderer who was frustrated with the poorly designed equpiment on the market. I showed mine at EGA and the women wanted some.

For years I would just roll my counted cross stitch fabric around a wood dowel. Held the fabric so it would not flop over but was easy to turn when finishing off a thread on the back. The bigger the piece of fabric, the longer the dowel. Now my daughter is using a dowel too. Light and easy.

This is dim of me - how do you control/hold the dowel? I've never used a frame or hoop for cross-stitch, work on linen mostly using a sew or scoop stitch rather than stab, and have always had great results, but whichever method is comfortable for you is what you should use. The critical thing is to have clean hands, don't miss-spell, and don't bleed on your cross-stitch!

I just roll the fabric up around the dowel until I reach the portion that I want to stitch. Clean hands are indeed important. Some things just won't wash out. Ask me how I know.

I know how you know, not by my own experience but by seeing the problem someone else had - real disaster. Had another friend who had some smudges on her pieces but hadn't washed it, said she didn't cross-stitch was washable. Hers came out, fortunately.
