 Book for Basic Handsewing

I have most of the books that are mentioned on this board but I still have to search for instruction on basic handsewing stitches through all the books. Can you help with suggestions for a good book of handsewing stitches. I have all the AS&E books as well....still need to learn basic handsewing. Thanks, Diane

Do you have the Sarah Howard Stone books? They have a lot of hand stitches in them.

Sarah Howard Stone and Margaret Pierce both have written good books about handsewing, and the application to heirloom sewing. Primrose Sully's book "Stunning Stitches" is another nice book. (It *may* be oop).

My (1975) copy of the "Vogue Sewing Book" also has a whole section on hand stitching. There are good directions for stitches, but not so much detailed information on how to use them. Other basic sewing books like this might cover hand stitches as well.

I have the Sarah Howard Stone,"French Hand Sewing" and all three of the Mildred Turner books as well as all of Martha's and many others....but that is the problem for me...searching through all these when in a hurry to finish a garment. :) :) I am finishing an Easter outfit from a combination of different AS&E & Martha patterns...dress, slip, bloomers and bonnet and find different suggestions for finishing edges. I am still learning basic skills from these books and have to go searching each time. The stitch that sent me to the internet this time was the slip stitch. It seems like such a no brainer but I need basic instruction along with all the smocking and special stitching that I am learning, maybe even a video that has basic sewing instruction. By the way, my very complicated outfits are turning out just beautifully....I just would like to have a good book with basic stitches illustrated for quick reference. Thanks, Diane

Diane,
There are some on-line instructions in basic handsewing stitches that you might try. Simplicity has some that are detailed at http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?page=section/classroom/teachingTools_handSewing.html

And the other "Martha" has a page on some basic stitches at http://www.marthastewart.com/page.jhtml?type=content&id=channel172056&contentGroup=MSL&site=living

And another one is http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/html/el_handstittch.html

They teach the basic 5-6 stitches that are used in all clothing construction...heirloom or not.

Oh, forgot to mention.... the best BOOK i've ever found that demonstrates all the necessary handstitches and the very "basics" of handsewing is Claire Shaeffer's Couture Sewing Techniques.

Claire does "couture" patterns for Vogue and is an "expert" on European handsewing and couture sewing techniques. She goes step by step into the proper needles, threads and stitches for all kinds of hand sewing. Lots of good pics and sketches, too.

The entire 2nd chapter of the book is on handsewing. But the rest of the book is all about couture touches on garments and how the really big names in couture "operate." A fasinating book.

Thanks for the answers...I have been away from the board for a while since finishing Easter sewing. I am doing the Sherbert Fizz kit from AS&E and it must be finished by this Friday for 4 yr kindergarten. I just learned Brazilian Embrodery recently and used those threads for matching socks. I will check for the Claire Shaffer book. Diane
