 Waste knot

Perhaps I know this by a different name? What is a waste knot, please?

I have seen this used in hand embroidery. You make a knot in the thread and then stick the threaded needle into the fabric about 1-2 inches from where you will be stitching. Then bring the needle up in the appropiate place and continue stitching. Later you can cut the knot off and weave the thread thru stitches to secure it. It basically just holds the end out of the way so that you can get started stitching.

Wendy Shoen shows this on Martha's program. She uses it just as nannaj describes, but she uses it to avoid any knots on the work.

I prefer to leave 2-3 inches for a waste knot because it gives me more to work with when weaving the thread back under the finished stitches - you can always cut off what you don't use. I like about 1 1/2 inches woven under as well - I think it holds better in a piece that will be washed on a regular basis.

Nannaj, Carol, Lib- Thank you all! I learned something new today! Unfortunately, our public television in Wisconsion doesn't air Martha's show anymore. (I guess we're too Northern or something!), but my son-in-law tapes it for me in Huntsville, Alabama, when he remembers. Speaking of which- guess where I'm staying for Martha's School In Huntsville in July for my very first Heirloom School?? (Me, who can barely sew a hem!)

Kathleen, my public tv station doesn't carry Martha either, but I watch it at 11:00 on Saturdays on the BYU channel. See if you can get that channel. DirectV 374.
