 Hand beading Alencon Lace

I would appreciate any advice on beading lace rather than buying it already beaded. I want to do a beaded lace skirt on a wedding gown. If you know where can I get the beads for this project and what kind are best I would love that information. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Gita

Hi Gita- I hand beaded this lace on my daughter's wedding gown 13 yrs ago- apporx 40,000 pearls and sequins :>) I got great advice from a shop owner who also stocked the pearls and sequins- sadly she is no longer in business. I think I used a double strand of regular sewing thread, but now I think beading thread would be stronger.- or you could use beeswax on regular sewing thread for strength. JoAnn's and Michaels carries it, along with Swarovski crystals. Some websites carry Swarv pearls also. I knotted the thread often- about every inch or so, which was a good thing- when my friend and I were underneath the dress to tie up the train for bustling, the beads on my dress got caught on the wedding gown beads, and my friend had to bite the thread to get me loose. You don't want to lose too many pearls if they get caught on something. I sewed the beads on the lace first, then cut apart the appliques and sewed them on the dress. When I was doing the beading, I used a lap tray. Then I used the dining room table to spread out the dress on. Make sure you have good lighting. I hope you have plenty of time for your project- it took me about 7 months to complete! I'm very glad I was able to do it but it was a true labor of love.

If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area they carry Mill Hill beads and Montees ( sew on Swarvoski crystals) in the area where the skeins of DMC embroidery thread is . Usually pearls are sewn on with silk thread and knotted 1/2" to 1" apart. Also check over in the jewelry making area at Michael's or Hobby Lobby for strings of glass pearls that could be used. For on-line orders check http://www.firemountaingem.com, or <http://www.shipwreckbeads.com,or http://www.nationalsupply.com, http://peacecreek.com,http://www.thunderbirdsupply.com

Baltazor's carries the beads for this. Her mother used to teach a class for this.
She still caries some supplies.
I would call her and see.

The left hand column is wedding embellishments, lace etc.
The pictures you see for the pearls is stranded pearls for sewing onto the lace, etc.

I used these for my niece's 1st communion dress for glitz and fun.

Thank you for the information. As of this minute, I think that I'm buying 72" wide Alencon lace for the skirt of the gown and beading it myself. I went to a bead show this afternoon and bought sample beads to show my daughter. Also, I just finished checking prices at Fire Mountain Beads. If I can't buy the beads in Manhattan, I think that I'll order them from Fire Mountain. Thanks again. Gita

I am a veteran lace beader, 3 daughters and many dresses for others. I used a tupperware divided covered cotainer to store beads thread and scissors. Use quilting thread or wax covered thread. Stitch a few beads and then back stitch and knot stitch that way a break in the thread will not be a disaster. One of my daughters rode the bus to college and because she wanted her lace heavily beaded I gave her a piece and her personal container. Everyday she beaded on the way to work. She taught many to bead and some asked for pictures of her in her dress . A few came to the wedding. What a great memory. She appreciated the dress much more and wnts to use the lace on her daughters dresses. Karen from Texas

To update everyone on my progress: The lace skirt of the wedding dress is beaded, my dress is ready to be hemmed, the bodices of the flower girl dresses are somewhat together and the corset is made for the wedding dress. I think that I'm on schedule so far. Gita
