 Capri Sun Bags (2004)
Author: Is That Sew

First of all I want to say" Thank you" for the replies on the 12 wt cotton thread to everyone that answered! I love this website! I have learned more here by reading than anywhere else! I did try the capri sun purse today that I had heard about. I just made the small bag that has two on the front and two on the back. I used the capri sun sport and like the looks of it. I put the ends and botton in reverse showing the silver side. I was wondering if anyone else had tried them? I had a little trouble inserting the bottom. It takes about one and one-half bags for that, so I just used two and over lapped them. Is there a trick to getting the corners to fit together well? It just seemed to take a lot of time to do the bottom and was awkward to sew on. I haven't made the handles yet. Do you take the bags apart and fold them for the handles? If anyone has any tips on this I would appreciate your help. Thanks!

Gail-
The girls in my troop have been doing this as a fund raiser-we found out about it here on the forum.
I tweeked the instructions that I was able to find online and think we've made it a little easier
First we cut the tops of the bags off at the heat seal line so they are all uniform size and can be washed and dried (wash in trash can-put in mesh bag, dry in dryer on fluff)
Then we sew together all the flat parts-turn down top and stitch at uniform place
front and back with handles and velcro
sides
bottom-we use the same number as in the front/back panels (ie. two bag front gets a two bag bottom)

next we sew together the front/back panel to the sides leaving (IMPT!!!) the bottom 1/4 in open-don't sew all the way down otherwise you cannot set in the bottom

After all the sides/panels are sewn together then start on one of the long panels and sew in the first bottom seam. Next go to the two short sides and sew them in (if you've lined everything up the same way they should all fit-if there's a little hanging over no biggie just trim it off and it's gonna look great)
Now-the last long side-fold your purse so that it folds like a paper bag (go pull on out and look at how the bottom folds up) The sewn long side should be the part of the bottom that folds up on the panel leaving you with your two bottom parts lined up and ready to be flatten and sewn-sew across and trim off the extra after sewing. We sew with a zig zag and always backtack everywhere. We make them in all sizes and the girls just started to do wallets-I want a hat:) This is just way too much fun!!! Let me know if you need a pic of the process (it is very easy but hard to explain) and I"ll be glad to email you some. Cherie

Cherie,
I made my first Capri Sun bag last Fri.--figured the instructions would need a little improvement before doing my next one. Did you zig-zag the whole bag or use the straight stitch on parts? I zig-zagged the one I did, but saw one with all straight stitching. Also...I hot glued a strip of maribou feather boa around the top edge (like the one I saw with the straight stitching)--too cute! My little girl took it to church with her & everyone had a fit over it! How are you making wallets? Those are probably really cute too.

Gail,
I cut my bags into 3 strips & used only 2 of the strips from each bag to make the handle. The instructions I used were from http://www.wwvisions.com/craftbb/askbb/8899.html They say to tri fold a bag vertically then cut on the fold line to make 3 strips. Take 2 strips & zig zag them together to make one long strip. Tri fold the strip & zig zag down that length in the middle. I attached my handles to the sides before putting the rest of the purse together. I used the little "arrow" (where the straw goes) as a guide to attach each end of the handle to the side. It's really harder to explain than it is to actually do it! Cherie's instructions sound really good...I'm going to make another one in the next few days.

I've been making these bags for two years now. I leave the tops alone and fold them over to the inside for a nice finished edge. I cut out the bottoms to wash and dry the pouches and then front and back lie nicely together. I zigzag mine but I'm sure straight stitching would be fine. I use just the front of the pouches to make handles. I cut the front in half lengthwise then overlap and zigzag the short ends together to make a long enough handle. I then fold them in half lengthwise twice to make them narrow enough and sturdy.

The only pieces that I trim are the handles and one of the pieces for the bottom. When I sew the side seams, I stop about 1/4" before the bottom. Remember to backstitch. This makes putting the bottom on little easier.

We zig zag all our bags-I did one with a straight stitch but didn't feel comfortable with the strength of it. It would be much easier to control the size of the bag by cutting out the bottoms but...we are working with 11 yr olds and wanted a clean product and this just seems to work best for that. For the small 2 bag totes we use 2 bags cut apart for the handles and then trifolded-for our medium totes we use 3 bags-we use all parts of the bags too. Some the handle are made out of the front of the bag-some just the backs (silver) and some mixed. I loved the boa around the tops of the bags but we had a real problem finding a consistent supplier for them here so we dropped that idea. We use 4-5 bags to make a wallet depends on if you want an extra pocket in them. The really fun part about these bags is that no two are alike-and we do get crazy and add pocket on the fronts, sides, inside and I"ve even monogramed a few but usually only for the really "special" people in our lives (teachers, lunchroom ladies who collected for us, etc). Have fun with it-we also say a clutch with a fold over top-way too cute and I have the urge to make a visor-you can just get carried away with this! Cherie

My daughter uses aquarium tubing to make her handles. Sometimes plain and sometimes she runs different colored pipe cleaners through the tubing to match the fuzzy trim she puts around the top of the purse. She has made around 30 of these bags and sells them as quick as she can make them. You are right when you say that no two are alike!!!! Everyone wants a different color or a mixture of colors. I have 3 myself. An orange Tang one (it has monkeys on it), a lime green cool aid one and a lemonaid cool aid one with turquoise trim. Anything goes with these bags. Belinda, I love the idea of the tubing for the handles! They would be more comfortable to hold. I have and Orange Tang one too. It is one of the first that I made. I have an orange, yellow and white plaid skirt that matches.

I saw tubing filled with rocks/crystals/ tiny seed beads, not exactly sure what it was. It looked like they were attatched with a grommet thingy.

Why do you stop 1/4 inch to bottom? I am sure the answer is obvious but I don't get it.

There is a link to instructions for these bags in the Bernina eNews that I just received, but it opens to a .pdf file and I cannot make a link. Does anyone know how to do that? (or is anyone even interested??) I could forward the newsletter to someone wise in these ways, and they could post it here!

One of the girls here used an old studded belt for the handle on her bag and used grommets to attach a bright fabric lining...so cute

You have to stop 1/4 inch from the bottom of the sides in order to "set in" the bottom of the bag-you're sewing a seam across the botton of the bags and there's no place for the seam to go otherwise.

I love the twist of using the tubing-would love to know how it's being attached. Yet another variation- lots of fun. Once you get a method that works for you it's really so much fun-how much. In our area, the small (2 pack) with no boas, go for $8, medium (6 pack) 12 and large (12pack) are 20-we also do double large for $30. When it's a recycle product you have all profit except for the thread and the velcro-pretty good. We have a really hard time keeping up with the demand-we really never ever thought it would turn into what it has for us. I have a group of 10/11 yr olds that can say they have a business-a real business and they have gained so many skills from it. Their confidence and professionalism is just astounding to us. We're doing "purse parties" now (like tupperware but with our purses) and it's a blast to walking in and watch the girls go. Who knows-this may be one of the type of experiences that may produce the next Mary Kay, Barabara Walters or Martha Pullen-and to think we got the idea orginally from this forum:) My girls now lurk reading the threads too-for the next great idea:) and to find something they love for their Silver Award project. Keep the ideas coming!

Just thinking here girls - still have not found Capri Sun - perhaps Super Store or CO OP - not at Safeways.
Would IV tubing work for straps? I think that you can buy it at Home Care places - I was thinking perhaps you could dye rice - it surely is cheaper than beads and fill the tubing with colourful rice or even sand like they make those sculptures out of. Any ideas of what you would use for dye - trying to remember the last time something stained my fingers and would not wash off.

Kool-Aid, the plan unsweetened (but not diet) powder is often used to dye fabrics, so it might work. Just glancing, and rushing off now, so if this idea is "out to lunch" just ignore!

Could the "filling" for the tubing have been aquarium gravel? Thinking about aquarium tubing gave me that idea. Comes in many bright colors.

Having young kids, I "know" you can dye macaroni with food color & rubbing alcohol (don't want to use water or the macaroni gets limp) - maybe something along the same lines with rice or sand.

Just ideas - maybe not good ones! ;^)

Hello, I am Belinda's daughter. For anyone interested I posted the directions how I attach the aquarium handles to the juice bag purses that I make (see the topic started on this). I looked and looked and I finally found a great juice bag purse tutorial with color diagrams. I am listing the web address. You might have to copy and paste to get it to work, as I am not sure if it will come out as a link.

Cherie, Thanks SO much for the helpful hints!!!! I did kinda figure out a system that works for me, much like what you said yours is. I do fabric handles and a fabric velcro strap tht goes from front to back of the bag. I also found that if you leave the one bottom one unstitched(on the inside) when you over lap the two bags that makes a hide -away compartment for the detachable velcro strap. I split the bottoms open on my bags and wash them out then they get sewn when sewing them together. I use Goo Be Gone to take off the sticky straw residue on the fronts of the bags but heard that Disolve-It works better without as much rubbing...... I am very interested in the wallets and what you did to monogram them. Did you figure out the wallet pattern or did you find it somewhere? I have not made the big tote bag yet but have a gal that wants me to make her one, so I will give it a try in a few days. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas!!!! Gail

Wallets-one of our 12 yr old figured this one out-for the basic wallet sew 4 pouches together. (2 length wise on one side and 2 on the other) Now comes the design part-she wanted a pocket on the inside to put the little plastic holder for credit cards, etc so she too an empty pouch, folded it in half and placed it on one end then stitched the top part of the pocket to the wallet(will the the opening part of the whole wallet) and then continued to stitch through all 3 layers around the outside of the wallet. It's really simple-much easier than the bag. Sometime they put on a velcro tab sometimes not-depends. It just folds in half like a men's wallet. Now for the women's that's something I"d have to put into pictures because I just can't explain it well-not hard just hard to explain.
Forget it-I tried and it made no sense at all-I"ll just take some pics and post them and post the link. It's easy when you see it.....:)

I visited our local "farmer's" market yesterday and one booth had tons of these bags for sale. Several sizes, a variety of "flavors" and prices ranging from $16 for a small tote to $28 for a large tote. These were very simple, no boas, no fancy handles, no lining... but they were getting great reactions from the shoppers! One of the marketing strategies seemed to be that they were waterproof... go figure!

Or is it possible to just e-mail that whole issue of the e-news that had the instructions in it? This looks like an intriguing sort of project that would make a fun, off-the-wall gift. Many thanks.

Gale, I tried emailing you the whole newsletter, but I don't know that it's going to work. All of the pictures were missing, with just the little "x's" in the corners. The link for the bag was there (I think), they call it a "citrusy tote," but the link went no where. This could all be related to the Bernina message boards problems lately, or could be my computer, because it needs a personality adjustment of some kind! I looked on the Bernina site, but my searches came up empty for citrusy, and tote turned up other projects. The only other hint is that it was in the "Foot Note" category. I did look there too, though, so I hope you find it. Last chance is that if it was a .pdf that I saved a copy... so I'll have a look and forward that to you if I have it. I think that will have to come as an attachment, so hopefully your computer will let it through. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

You can always give your regular foot a try. My dealer sells (pricey!) little bits of stick on teflon, so you can put it on your regular foot. Much cheaper than buying a teflon foot, which may be a special order that you have to wait for. I haven't made one of these bags, so perhaps one of the experienced Capri Sun bag sew-ers can answer!

Just and FYI-there is a new Yahoo Group just for makers of Capri Sun totes. We don't use a special foot-but I do clean my machine every time when I'm done with the bags-a little alcohol wipedown removes any sticky left.
We're still going strong with our tote bags and having a blast. It's a great recycle project and they are waterproof. Better yet the ones with a silver lining is insultated too. They are very strong (if sewn right) and last-have had one over 6 months doing heavy duty work and it's looking pretty new. Have fun!

Hayley, just follow the links -- two sets of instructions with MusicalMommy or Becky's links. The one I have that I was sending out is the same one MM posted. Do you think I could make one of these out of a dog cookie bag? Looks like the same sort of material, and it's solid gold coloured. Dog cookies smell like cinnamon, so no lingering not-so-pleasant odor! I could call it my "Midas Bag."

I have found that if I buy pieces of plastic like used for table cloths that you can find on a big roll at Wal-mart, you buy this by the yard. I make my own clear handles for my purses. You can use the handles clear or you can put ribbon or lace or anything of your choice inside of the handle and it is a lot easier to sew on the bag. I have used the round tubing and this can be very hard to work with so try this idea. The last one I made I used the different flovors of the bags and when I made my handles I used the wire that is used for decorations and has multicolored tags and put this inside of the the handle and it match the bag. The colors were almost the same

Hi. I make bags out of the Kool -aid jammer bags. I line the inside with fabric and they are really cute. I would be interested in selling these bags to you for your shop.

PLEASE do not add any more posts to this thread. Too many posts will cause the WHOLE board to crash. If you wish to post a message, go to the top or bottom and click on "New Topic." WE CANNOT STRESS THIS STRONGLY ENOUGH. WE HAVE REQUESTED THIS PREVIOUSLY AND IT HAS BEEN IGNORED. And yes, I realize that capitals represent "yelling" but it seems necessary to get the message across.

I have some trouble also but best if you sew from top to 1/4" from bottom when sewing on your side pieces. It will work a lot smoother for you but still not exactly what I would like but this is what most are doing

I've been making these bags for several months now. Can't keep them around. My daughter brings one to school or dance class where someone will buy it right off her shoulder. I may be interested in selling wholesale to you.

Please send me instructions for the purse...I have granddaughters that want purses ASAP. I would appreciate all the help you could give me with this project. I sew, but only clothing, never purses

Thank you so much.

Hello Cherie, I am going to make the Capri Sun Bags for my 4-H Demonstration. I'm not much of a sewer though, and like you said, the directions make it sound very difficult. You also mentioned that you would send pictures. If you could do this it would be very helpful. I have ten days to get this altogether. So I need all the help I can get. Thank you very much, and i hope I am as succesful as it sounds that you are.

I saw a girl yesterday with a Kool Aid Jammer purse with red fuzzy boa trim around it. I saw it and just stopped dead in my tracks. I just thought it was the cutest purse I had ever since.. Naturally having young girls ages 7 & 10.. They started jumping up and down and thrilled with that purse. Guess what? They want one .. I think it would be fun to try.. Wish me luck.. :)

The feather boas can be bought at a store called Dollar General for
$1.00 each and you can use it on 2 bags.
They have several colors also.
