 making maternity clothes

Does anyone have any tips on how to change regular jeans into maternity? I want to change some jeans into some low rise maternity. That is where the waist hits you under the belly. I think I would need to use really wide elestic for that. Do I need to cut off some of the front or what? Thanks!

Dear, when we all wore maternity clothes, the idea was to hide the belly. Drawstring pants and long tops were more the style. Mentally, I can really sympathize with the idea of being proud of your big, round, baby-filled belly, but emotionally, I still have trouble with it. If I were you, I would go down to the RTW store and see how these jeans are made. I've been know to spend a lot of time lurking in the dressing room with a pencil and a pad of paper checking out construction ideas.

I couldn't get into the show-the-belly or below-the-belly stuff 2 years ago, so kept trying to cover/hide it myself. But, you could maybe trace the pants from just below the crotch up to the top to get the dimensions correct.

I should have made myself more clear. I DO NOT want to show my belly. I just like the way they feel. They are much more comfortable to wear. My maternity tops cover up my belly.

I know what you are saying. I always wore the very low cut french bikini panties when I was pregnant. They were so much more comfortable than the over the belly kind.

Not trying to be fresh here... but wouldn't these low pants have a tendency to fall down?

No they don't fall down because they are held up with very wide elastic. I would put a pic on here if I know how! LOL! They are a pair of jeans that has a short panel all the way around the waist that is made up of stretchy knit and it encases very wide elastic. They don't cut into like full panel jeans.

Well, I made the over-the-belly pants but they never stayed there. Instead they always crept downward and hung as though I had devised low rise anyway. I always wished I could pin them to my belly button somehow! LOL. My maternity tops were quite long, thankfully. I think that's why the second time around I made sure to have more dresses and jumpers. It was less miserable than constantly trying to find a private place to hitch up my pants!

Blessings,
Carla

Could you just sew a deep V shape piece of elastic and attach it to either side of the open zip front. Then you can use your jeans again afterwards?

You can use what we used to call stays - button on the bra and those rubber things that girdles used to come with to hold stockings - almost like those suspenders men wear but the garter things work very well and you dont have that uncomfortable rolling.

Forgot what they were called - like garterbelt attachments.

Maybe you could compare a pair of regular jeans to a some maternity jeans with the regular stretchy panel. I think the elastic on the low rise maternity jeans starts where the panel would attach to the denim on a pair of regular maternity pants. I had a pair of the low rise maternity jeans last year when I was expecting my youngest. I seem to recall that's about where the elastic started and they had a really wide elastic in the waist. I've never seen elastic that wide in the store. I wonder where you can get it?

I HATED those jeans! They didn't fit until I was big as a house and then I always felt like my pants were falling down. But I was 34 and expecting my seventh, so I'd pretty much given up fashion for comfort.

And before I forget, Congratulations!
