 Anyone sew Riding Breeches?

Hello all - I posted this question in the Home Dec section (which is on my favorites and usually the only forum I go to), forgetting there were other categories here. I'm thinking about sewing some riding clothes for myself and am unsure as to whether or not it's worth the effort. Have any of you had any experience with this?

I've not sewn much in the way of clothing (mostly home dec stuff) and started riding again recently and need more pants. They are fairly costly - especially for the good ones. I don't know that I could find the 'good' fabric I'd like (my favorite pair is a Shumacher - german manufactured) and they run about $300 if purchased in the store. I also could use a couple of just knock-around pair - not sure that I could find decent fabric here either. Almost like a workout pant - but durable fabric. They don't have inside seams and they either have faux or real leather knee or full seat patches.

Also, any good pattern suppliers you know of? I've looked at everything on the web (not a real lot of them) and just wondered if I could get some unbiased feedback if any of you have tried this.

SewNorth was kind enough to post an answer for me in the Home Dec section which was helpful, but thought it worth posting another here to get more input from any of you. She recommended a Jean Hardy and gave me the Textile Outfitters website. I don't have a serger and thought I might need one - though SewNorth did not use one for hers and they seemed to work out fine.

Appreciate comments from you gals. Thanks.

Linda

Linda-
I've sewn way too many-I rode dressage for many years as did my kids and that can get expensive real fast-but not so bad when you sew your own breeches-since you're using a lycra/cotton/wicking knit blend you don't need a serger-just a machine with a good straight stich, a zig zag and if possible a 3 step stretch zig zag.
I've used either fabric.com, wazoodle.com and a couple of other places to get my fabric-depending on where you live you can get a light, medium or heavy weight knit-we liked the 60/40 blend. Medium weight for show and light for working breeches. I also used faux suede for the knee patches (that's where you use that 3 step zig to stitch it on)---honestly we wound up using a bike pants pattern for our working breeches and then just put a knee patch on the inside. I also made some jumpers too with T's-we're in a hot area so something that pulls on and off is much preferable to zippers. There is "Suitability" that has some nice patterns that are designed for riding-esp. the coats. I made even my show breeches in white with the elastic waist-and the judges loved them. It might have cost me $5 per pair to make them...I had all colors. THey are very very easy to make-C

You might find this link helpful. If covers patterns, fabrics, as well as giving several recommendations for types of fabrics.

I needed some "old fashioned" riding pants for drum major pants a couple years ago...the kind that "Lucy" wore in one of her shows. I found a lot of patterns for more modern pants/coats in the links shown here.

I have used the Suitability patterns mentioned by Linda. I want to add that the Suitability website has links to fabric suppliers too.
The website has a pictures section that shows people's garments that were made using these patterns, pretty impressive!
One friend has used the western show patterns and has made some beautiful vests that would have cost her hundredes of dollars for a fraction of that. She even uses leathers for trims thast she gets from Ebay and crystals....
A bit different fron dressage breeches, but an example of what you can do by sewing it yourself.

Ladies - thanks so much for your replies. This is all very helpful. Thanks for the tip on the fabric links and the 60/40 blend. My usual fabric supplier hasn't gotten anything that is suitable so I'll check these out.

Thank you!

Linda

Is anyone familiar with Equissentials. They make terrific riding breeches with the best fabric , but they're super expensive. They have a stretch French Terry fabric that is great but I can't find that fabric anywhere. Anyone know where to get it?
