 Bias Neck Band?
Author: dkz

I want to apply a bias neck band, about 3/4" to a shirt. Does anyone know the ratio for the length of band to the circumference of the neck opening to make the band lie correctly? I am using mid-weight cotton.

Are you talking about knit fabric as in ribbing on t shirts?

I'd just measure the neck opening at the seam line, which is where you want it to lie flat.

I've used patterns sometimes that either specify a length to cut, or provide a pattern piece, and the size is slightly less than the raw neck edge of the garment. The intention is to stretch it slightly to pull it in just a tad... once finished and pressed it lies nice and smooth... no puckers and no gaps. But I don't know of any rules or ratios... the last thing I made that was like that was a mock wrap top on an Asian style dress... I'm trying to figure out how to describe it... easier to look at it. I will post the link at the end. Anyway, that particular bias piece had diamonds to align and the straight section along the front was about 1/2" to 3/4" shorter than the garment piece. However, it was not stretched or eased or anything on the back neck and the upper part of the front. Probably as clear as mud. Don't know if that helps at all... hope so!

Actually I did two of them... if you scroll forward and back from this link you can see both of them: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinkerpaws/2396716548/in/set-72157603690984355/

Thanks for the input. I am thinking that 3/4" is too much to get it to lie correctly. This is not going well, anyway. I messed up sewing the bias pieces together so I made a facing pattern from the already assembled shirt. That was too big around the neck. I will try that again, but I can't find any interfacing in my stash. Some days it doesn't pay to sew (or think you can sew >:/ ). I have a pattern of sorts, but it is for a shirt that buttons up the front. I did not think this would get so complicated. When I was young I could have donne this in an afternoon.
