 Bias Skirt: Six Easy Patterns
Author: Norma K.

I have a question about the bias skirt from Martha's Six Easy Patterns. Since I was only able to find 45"-wide material, I have contemplated making the bias skirt cut on the straight-of-grain. There is a slight stretch in the moleskin I will be using. Has anyone else tried this? The fabric is too heavy I'm afraid to use in the 8-gore skirt and it might be bulkier than would be flattering. I have also contemplated turning the 8-gore skirt into a 4-gore, although I'm not sure how adept I'd be at it. I am helping ds's young lady friend with this, so I want the whole process to be as encouraging and streamlined as possible. I shall also ask this on one or two of the other forums.

I haven't made this particiular skirt NOT on the bias, but I have made a different gored skirt on the straight grain. It worked just fine! I haven't used moleskin in a really long time, but I would think the minimal stretch of the moleskin vs the minimal stretch of the bias fabric would be similar. I'd give it a try if it were me!

I finally decided to make the 8-gore skirt for myself for an orchestra concert. I "removed" the little flippy-outty godet-type part of the bottom of the pattern pieces, and also re-drew the lines to make the pieces less full at the bottom. Since my fabric was so heavy, I didn't need extra fullness. I also diminished the amount of easy through the hips to about 3" for the same reason. After sewing and/or serging each of the eight (!) seams three times, it fits perfectly! It has just the right amount of graceful flow to it. Now, I wish I had written down exactly what I did, because I want to make another one in brown in the next week or so! (I don't really wear black at all, and the cheapie black shoes I bought I shall never wear again--that one evening set my plantar fasciitis back a year!)

One more comment: I have been noticing lately that bias skirts really cling a lot to the bottom/tummy, even on very slender people who haven't an abundance of either and who are trying to dress modestly. That makes me extremely reluctant to try one! I noticed with dd that a very crisp poly-cotton slip underneath helped a lot, and perhaps a lining would have the same effect. However, one can't go around suggesting the same to one's friends, unless it is before a project is initiated! :-) This morning I noticed it even on a skirt that had front darts.

Norma,

That is a characteristic of fabric cut on the bias -- it will literally hug every curve, even if the least bit fitted. That's the good AND the bad news!

The Fairy Godmother

Do you think a lining attached only at the waist would effect the "hang" of this skirt ? I want to make a less full version of this but I want a lining in mine, do you think that would work.

Sorry, I haven't been visiting this forum lately. I don't know why a lining wouldn't work. That would seem especially desirable if a thin, non-opaque fabric were used.

I never did get the brown skirt made yet... I'm working on a summer nightgown for a May trip to southern Spain! My brain has switched to spring, although today we got SNOW!

Let us know, if you make a lining, how it turns out!
