I have had my pleater for about 17 years and it came with a fabric covered dowel. I met a lady that wants me to teach her how to smock. She wanted to buy a pleater so she went looking for one. Looks like they don't come with a dowel any more. Is this right? Does anyone know? But to use a dowel does it have to be covered? I don't think so but tell me what you all think.
Thanks for the info!!

I have bought two new over the last 15 years and neither came with a dowel. I use a wooden dowel, not covered. I have a couple of lengths. I use a shorter one for small items.

I have mine covered with felt. It helps to hold the fabric.

I have had my pleater for about 20 years. It did not come with a dowel. I have two a 1" dowels, a long one (36 inches) and a shorter one ( around 15"). What a great idea to cover it with felt to help hold the fabric!! I'm going to do that before I start Christmas smocking.

Mine came with an uncovered dowel, but dowels are easy to come by and relatively inexpensive.

Thank you for all your input. My son-in-law bought my pleater for me as a surprise that many years ago. Mine came with a dowel but I can't imagine he would have known to buy one if it didn't come with the pleater. My friend said her husband cold make her one.
Thanks again!

I use a dowel that is thinner. Has worked as sometimes a bishop dress has a lot of fabric to build up.
