It has been an interesting experience. I was in Africa when the fire came through. Many of the people there have nothing beyond the clothes on their back and, hopefully, a pair of shoes. And I was worried about my "stuff," of which I have way too much. I left California with 3 bags and came back with 1. The need is overwhelming.
As for my little valley, we are grateful that major devastation was avoided and there was no loss of life. Still, the situation is difficult for those who have lost everything, lucky to get out with their children, let alone pets, livestock, or anything else. I think the hardest hit are the artists in their 70s and 80s who were living in the canyons. A lifetime of creativity is gone, and they are too old to start over. The community is coming together to help one another, but I know some will never recover and will remain bitter. Please pray for God's grace and mercy.
