The light on my Janome 8000 had gone so dim, I resorted to trying to see the
screen by putting a towel over my head to get the right light. In time, that didn't
work either. My dealer said it would "cost a small fortune" to fix it, IF we could
find the part.

Well! Tom found a screen for it on ebay, and tonight the machine is back together
and the screen lights up like new! I can hardly believe it. He's been working on it
for days now, and the number of intricate parts inside just blew my mind. I didn't
think he would EVER remember how to get it back together again lol!

But here it is, and my husband is my new hero. I am happy as a little clam to
have my good old Janome working again : ).

Thank you! I'm tickled pink. And the part was only $59 too. My Janome
dealer said it would be so expensive, I may as well buy another machine.
Guess he just didn't want to fix it, or would rather sell me a new one ; ).

Wow! That is so great, Linda!!! Any chance Tom could put a new motherboard into a Janome 9000?

Good news, Linda!! I remember the wind-in-place bobbin in one of my old computerized machines going out and I thought it was going to cost us a fortune to fix. Ended up that it was the slide plate for the bobbin compartment (worn out from 20+ years of daily use) and cost $15 to replace. My daughter has the machine now since my husband gave me the machine for our first anniversary and it has sentimental value. I kind of wanted it to stay in the family.

Thanks for celebrating with me girls! I'm still walking around on cloud nine about this,
and can hardly believe he was able to do it. It was a lot of work, and oh my goodness
the tiny little things inside that machine blew my mind! I never would have tackled it
myself....and the dealer didn't want to. Can't wait to tell that dealer Tom did it LOL!

Modo, Tom just might be able to do that for you! I'll ask him and see what he says.
He told me he found a repair manual for this stuff online, and there was a pretty good
youtube video showing how to do it. Actually, you're sharp enough you might be
able to do it too. I was defeated before I ever considered it LOL! It just looked so
hard to me. I didn't have much hope he would remember, or figure out, where to
hook back up all those little wires!

When I first turned it back on, it was stuck in 'bobbin winding' position and would
not move out of it. Turns out that's pretty common too, and was a fairly easy
fix.

I have SEW many wonderful feet for this Janome, that I've really missed using.
Some I've never used, but want to. Today I'll be playing with replicating stitches
from Carol Ahles 'Fine Machine Sewing'.....making machine entredeaux, for one.
Incredible stitch!!! Looks like the real thing to me : )

What a talented guy! My husband is a fixer too...but I have to be careful as to what I tell him needs fixing as he might "fix" something else too!

Great repair job, hubby!

Don't you love Carol Ahles book? She's the nicest person. I met her at a SB event in Arlington a couple times.

I raise my glass of sparkling cider to all those people who can use their hands in such talented ways to make life easier and joyful for all the rest of us, fortunately you have one right in your own home. I'm awestruck by his patience and expertise to even try such a thing, give him a big pat on the back from me please.

How wonderful!!! You have every right to be proud of his spirit of adventure, investigation, and stick-to-it-iveness! I'm very happy for you!

I think mine might try it in a situation where it was either try to fix it or throw it out, since these machines are so expensive. He fixed the tv by ordering whichever "board" he needed on line and soldering a few connections. He could've probably done it cheaper, but getting individual little parts and soldering all of them would've been a bit too much work.

Linda--I don't think I'd have the patience or steadiness to try to fix the 9000. I've been looking around, though, and it doesn't seem that the "A" board is available any longer, so mute point . I should probably just toss the thing, but I don't have the heart--so it sits in a bag in my sewing room.
