I need to repair a couple of buttonholes on an expensive pair of trousers for my son. The only way to fix them is by handwork which I've never done before. Any tips or tutorials you can recommend for me?

Hmmm. What is the fabric like? Depending on how frayed they are, I might machine
straight stitch around the hole first. You could do it by hand too but machine stitches
are usually neater. Can you do this by machine using an appropriate zig-zag? And was
the original buttonhole done by hand or machine?

I'd want to use a stabilizer of some kind too...the kind depending on if you can wet
the fabric to remove what shows when done.

Look at the thread used. It may not be buttonhole twist or top stitching thread if the
pants fabric is fine weight. You know how to do a buttonhole stitch by hand, right?
No expert advise here...just brainstorming with you!

Thanks Linda, the fabric is a midweight fabric typical for trousaers. I don't know the right name for it. They aren't frayed much but it looks like the original stitching is faulty and so is coming loose. The thing is, both buttonholes are on the back pockets so unless I take the pockets off (which I don't want to do) I can't get in there to machine stitch. I know how to blanket stitch, is that the same?

Carol, Buttonhole stitch and blanket stitch are the same except that the buttonhole
stitches are closer together. I see what you mean about not being able to use a
machine on those pockets. I'd be a little afraid to take them off too, for fear I wouldn't
get them back in place perfectly.

In the tutorial Gillie shared, it mentions the blanket stitch instead of buttonhole stitch.
The buttonhole shown looks pretty raggedy, but then bigger thread was used for
illustration purposes.

You could draw a line with a chalk marker or other marker that won't leave a mark,
to help keep stitches even...then just stitch carefully. You can do this!

Well I did it although it wasn't the most fun thing to do. Good thing the pants are black so my ugly stitches don't show and bad thing the pants are black because it was hard to see what I was doing even with excellent lighting. I can't see myself doing an entire garment with handmade buttonholes though, probably this is a one time deal.
