I have always wanted to do heirloom sewing and have been smocking forever. I finally found a class taught by Jeannie Baumeister of "Old Fashioned Baby" last month and I am loving it! Here are a few photos of my first attempt. There were some machine hiccups and some other "snags" but overall I am happy with the results.

Hand embroidery on bottom hem. Also my first attempt at hand embroidery - bullion roses and feather stitching.

What a lovely little dress! You did good, gal. Was the class online? Or did you go to a "brick and mortar" facility to do it? Tell us more...

I went to Farmhouse Fabrics in Beech Island, SC. It is an online high end fabric store with TONS of everything for heirloom sewing. Beech Island is southeast of Augusta, GA, not on the coast, as I hoped when I saw where the class was. Three intense days with Jeannie was wonderful and I learned a lot. There were about 15 people in the class and we shopped in the store lots! Bins and bins and bins of lace and trim. Rick rack and piping and buttons, and I could have spent a month, and a fortune, in there. There are photos on Jeannie's blog. I will post a link if I can figure out how.

What a wonderful little dress; I'd love to go to Farmhouse Fabrics someday. I agree that hands on teaching is the best (at least for me); I need someone to point out where I am going astray! But it looks like you didn't go astray at all. So glad you had a chance to take this class.

You did a fantastic job, echopkb! It's a lovely dress; did you make it for someone special? How wonderful to be able to take a hands-on course ... and from Jeannie Baumeister! Color me green!

First time I ever went to Farmhouse Fabrics, I wondered where was the beach and where was the island! The shop is in the middle of nowhere. It is well worth a trip if you have the opportunity to take a class there.

echopkb, I forgot to mention your feather stitching is outstanding! No one does a feather stitch like Jeannie B....and now we can say "no one does feather stitching like Echopkb : ).

May I ask if Jeannie gave special tips for doing this perfectly perfect looking feather stitch? I can do the stitch, but Jeannie's always looks so perfect and sometimes so SMALL it looks like a different stitch entirely. Again, how I envy you sitting next to this famous heirloom sewist!

I order from Farmhouse Fabrics often ... have never been there in person though ... someday soon I hope to make a side trip when I visit my daughter in NC.

Your dress is just lovely. Very nice work.

What a lovely, lovely dress!!!! This does NOT look like a first attempt at heirloom sewing. You should be very proud. Your feather stitching is so nice-I've tried and tried and still strive for acceptable. I guess I need a class from Jeannie to get mine to look like yours.

Thank you so much for all the nice comments. I am very excited to have another little girl to sew for. I smocked for my niece when she was a tot 30 years ago. Now a dear friend and coworker has two beautiful, adorable children, and their firstborn, a son, was the ringbearer in my wedding in 2012 when he was 18 months old. He has a sister who is one year old now. I have been working on another dress for her and had to set it aside for the Easter dress.

p.s. If you head to Farmhouse Fabrics, you better have a GPS. It is in the middle of nowhere and then some!
p.s.s. I read a post by Jeannie recently that she was going to do another class there next year.
